Find your local drug and alcohol services
Every part of the UK has free drug and alcohol services. In most areas you can contact your local service yourself, without a GP, and they can offer advice, talking therapies, prescribing, group support and a plan for what happens next. If you can't find yours, your GP or one of the free lines below can point you to it.

Get help nowHow The Rehab Index is different
When you search for rehab, the first results are usually the clinics that paid to be there. Some directories are owned by the clinics they list, and some take a fee every time you make an enquiry. This one doesn't.
- Every provider listed free. No one can pay to appear higher, look bigger or get a badge.
- The order never changes for money. Results are sorted by what you asked for: place, treatment, cost. Never by who sponsors the site.
- Checked against the regulator. UK listings show their CQC or equivalent registration and rating, with a link to the official report.
- Contact clinics directly. No call centres, no middlemen, no one earning from your enquiry.
- Ads say they're ads. Sponsors get a labelled space, never a listing, and nobody is recommended because they pay.

12-step meetings: free help in almost every town
For many people, the rooms are where recovery starts and stays. Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and the other 12-step fellowships are free, run by people who have been through it themselves, and there are meetings in almost every town, plus online at most hours of the day.
You don't need to go to rehab to try one, and you don't have to keep going back. Some people arrive from a clinic, some walk in straight from home, some try it twice and decide it isn't for them. If the 12-step wording puts you off, SMART Recovery is a free, non-religious alternative built around practical skills.
Choosing a rehab, safely
The right clinic depends on what you're facing, what you can afford and what happens after you leave. Our article on the questions to ask covers what to check, the red flags to watch for and how to confirm a provider is registered.
Questions to ask before choosing a rehabFrequently asked questions
Do I have to go to rehab to get well?
No. Some people stop drinking or using with help from their GP, a free local drug and alcohol service and a peer group: a 12-step room like AA or NA, or SMART Recovery. For others, rehab is the only way to get the help and support they need to make it stick: when stopping at home isn't medically safe, when the house is full of triggers, or when trying alone has already ended in relapse a few times. A clinic gives you medical supervision, daily structure and therapy for a few weeks, so you can focus on nothing else. What matters is that you get support and keep some of it in place afterwards.
How much does rehab cost in the UK?
Private residential rehab is usually charged per week, and prices vary widely by clinic and treatment. Each listing shows the provider's own price range. Free treatment is also available through NHS and council-funded drug and alcohol services.
Can I get rehab for free?
Local drug and alcohol services are free, and in most areas you can refer yourself. Funded residential places exist but are limited and assessed by your local service.
Is rehab in Thailand safe?
Yes. But of course, with the distance, it's not for everyone. Make sure you do the right checks, speak to them and get a feel for what's on offer. Look for a Ministry of Public Health licence, qualified doctors and a plan for medical detox and aftercare.
Does The Rehab Index recommend clinics?
No. We list providers fairly and give you the facts to choose. We never take money for rankings or referrals.
